Tips & Preparation
Listen to your Photographer
This is especially true for families with small children. Often photographers have methods of calming children and getting them to participate in the family shoot without a fight. These tried and true methods have been honed by plenty of years of experience. After all, Grandma might think little John's crying portrait is adorable , but you night not want it framed. Trust your family photographer to get the perfect portrait of your little one for your wallet.
Prepare the House
If your session is taking place in your home, pale neutrals and whites really help accentuate natural light. Dark and bold colors will tint the light and leave color casts on you in camera. Consider swapping colored bedding and curtains for whites or paler colors / neutrals.
Come Prepared
Moms are often rushing around before a photo shoot, making sure that their family is dressed and ready. Leave plenty of time for showers, baths, dressing, and grooming. When a family shows up to a family photo session rushed and disorganized, it sets the tone for a rushed and disorganized session. Give yourself extra time so that you are ready before it's time to head out the door.
Weather
If your session is outdoors and there is falling rain, it may be an issue. In this case, we will have to either "wait it out" or reschedule. I will try to contact you first, but please call me at 320-249-9979 if you have any doubts or concerns.
Eat & Sleep
Be certain not to schedule your photo session around your child's nap or bedtime. The best time for lighting is the two hours before sunset and after sunrise. If this is a bad time for your children, feel free to discuss a time with me that fits into your schedule.
Don't show up to a session on an empty stomach. I meet many families who come to a photo session with dinner scheduled at the end. If this is your plan, be sure to give everyone a healthy snack before the session. Everyone will be more focused, and have more energy. Feel free to bring crackers, nutrition bar, etc. Stay away from chocolate or colored items/drinks.
Bring an Activity or Props
Incorporate an activity that the family loves to do together. This gives you something to do with your hands and feet, engages the little ones, and brings an authentic smile to your face. Do you love to read together? Bring some books. Other ideas include: football, piggy back rides, races, hiking, singing, picnics, and even your pet! When families are engaged in doing something that they love together, the photographer will have the opportunity to take memorable photographs.
Have Fun!
Don't be afraid to pick up your children and toss them in the air. Give your spouse a sweet kiss on the cheek. Tell your significant other how much you love and appreciate them. The best photographs are often the ones where everyone is engaged or interacting with each other. Understand that not every picture needs to have everyone looking at the camera and smiling at the same time. These are the photographs that you will cherish most because they depict your family connection and your love.
After the Session
Once your images are fully edited and ready to be viewed, you will receive your image gallery within 2-3 weeks of your session, and will be live for 14 days (wedding galleries will be delivered within 4 weeks and are live for 30 days. From your gallery you are able to download the allotted number of images that come with your session package. Once your gallery expires you will not be able to view the images or order print products.
I believe in printing your images but I understand that you may want to share the cuteness with family & friends on social media. That is why your package comes with digital images. I do believe that your images deserve to be printed and enjoyed for years to come, so you are also able to order prints from my professional print shop right within your gallery! And as an added bonus, you can forward the gallery link to family & friends where they can view the photos and order their own prints, shipped directly to their home!
