What to Wear
Consider the Season
It might seem like common sense, but it's worth mentioning anyway. Keep in mind the weather when you plan your outfits, especially during unpredictable MN seasons!
Play it safe by checking the weather forecast before your session and also the morning of, just in case. Be prepared to be flexible with your wardrobe in case you have to switch it up last minute. Layers are great!
Winter
Spring
Now is the time to pull out your strongest layering game! Lucky for you, not only will wearing layers in your photos keep you warm, but they look so good and add a lot of visual interest to a photograph! Try layering a collared shirt with a sweater, or a nice sweatshirt with a jacket, or a sweater dress with a blanket scarf.
Summer
Fall
Spring time in MN is very unpredictable! It could be cold, snowing, warm, & everything in between. Once again, layers can be very effective here.
Choose something summery & comfortable like sandals or flip flops. Depending on the location of your session, you might even like to go barefoot!
Layers create visual interest and will keep you warm & cozy while we're outside playing in the leaves. Think tights, cardigans, blazers, and scarves.

Be Comfortable & Confident
When picking out your clothes for the session, error on the side of comfort. You want to be confident in your clothing styles, but choose something timeless that will make you want to keep that family portrait up for years to come. Try to avoid trendy patterns and styles that might be outdated in a year. After all, you don't want to run to the mantle to hide those family portraits taken when shoulder pads and yellow stripes were in vogue, when friends come to visit five years down the road.
Dress for the Occasion
We will be shooting your session in your home, out and about in nature, or your favorite spot to frequent. You can dress as casually or as formal as you desire, just make sure it blends with your location choices. Mostly just wear something you feel AMAZING in!
Misc. Tips
~ Always wear clothing you feel comfortable and confident in.
~ Coordinate clothing with others. Think same tones and complimentary colors.
~ Think neutral, muted tones. Vibrant colors reflect lighting and can mess up skin tones in photographs.
~ Whites and pastels photograph beautifully.
~ If you are having an in-home session and you want to wear your pajamas or your baby wants to run around naked, I don't mind! I want to capture you in your natural state. Cuddles in bed look awkward in a suit & tie!
What NOT to Wear
~ Stay away from shirts and pants with logos. These can be distracting in photos.
~ Avoid busy patterns. These can be distracting in photos.
~ Vibrant & neon colors reflect lighting and can mess up skin tones in photographs. Think neutral, muted tones!
~ The same with colorful sneakers. Unless this is part of your personality that we are showcasing!
~ Try to avoid everyone wearing the same color and/or pattern. Too matchy-matchy can appear "flat" in photos. Find a color palette to work from and find pieces that blend together well.
